Albania is one of those countries where it helps to have a few good friends with good connections. Without friends, you can get seriously f*cked. As a precaution, visit your local embassy in Tirana. They will be surprised to see you. (They probably don't get too many tourists.)

Given the troubles in Macedonia, it's still a good idea to stay clear of the mountainous Northern area, especially if you enjoy holding onto your stuff. (Armed bandits would also enjoy them.)
