After Mussolini's solders were driven out of the country, the Nazi's moved in and were later also driven out in 1944. As a precaution against further invasions, the government built a defensive system of bunkers from 1943 until 1985. An estimated 800,000 bunkers cover the country side like a bad case of acne. (Albania is roughly the size of Maryland.)
